Chapter Six — The Silence
The telegraph was the one new thing the age had let into the Company's offices, wire being cheap, and it was by wire that the Vesta reached up and touched the top at last, on an October evening, in eleven words:
FIRE IN EAST WORKINGS VESTA. FORTY-ONE MEN BELOW. SHAFT HOLDS. FENN.
Nico was on the quiet floor when the boy brought it through, and he read it standing, and the floor of the world went — the cage-drop feeling, the floor there and then not — because it was October, and the fortnight was mid-shift, and the east workings were the deep seam, and the deep seam was Aldany's district, and Aldany's district was Petr.
He had no need to wonder. He kept the tables. He could have named from memory most of the forty-one.
The board met at ten that night, seven of them about the long table under the lamps, the Chairman at the head, the consulting engineer come straight from the train with the surveys still rolled under his arm; and Nico — because minutes were prose, and prose at the top meant Nico — Nico sat at the foot with the minute-book open and his pen filled, and took down, in the fairest hand in the Company's service, the two hours in which the top of the world did what it was for.
The engineer laid the survey flat and weighted its corners with inkwells, and gave it them plainly; he was a plain man; it was why he was retained.
The fire had broken out in the goaf of the east district and taken the return airway. The forty-one had been cut off beyond it, in the deep workings, at the moment of the outbreak eleven hours gone. The downcast shaft held, and the fire did not yet touch the main winning; but it was drawing toward the shaft pillar along the old workings, and the old workings could not be charted with confidence, the plans of the grandfather-pit being — he used the office word — imperfect. Two rescue parties had gone in by the return that afternoon. The first had brought out three men alive from this side of the fall, burned. The second had not come back, and its four names must be added to the count.
There were, said the engineer, two courses, and he would state them without ornament.
The first: to fight it. Keep the shafts open, drive at the fire through the old workings, and dig for the east district while air remained to it. He would not disguise the terms. The fire had the better ground. More rescuers would be spent — the four already spent said at what rate. And should the fire reach the shaft pillar while the shafts stood open and drawing, the Vesta was lost entire: every seam, every heading, the winning of thirty years, burning under the whole town's feet for a generation, as the Delling's neighbor-pit had burned in living memory. That was the first course.
The second: to seal. Stop both shafts with clay and timber, smother the fire of its air, save the pit. The colliery would stand; the fire, starved, would die in months; the Vesta would wind coal again by spring.
He rolled the weights off the survey and let it curl, and said the last part to the table, being paid to say it: as to the forty-one, the fire had held the return eleven hours, and the after-damp with it, and in the engineer's judgment, which the viewers below shared, the men beyond the fall — he did not say could not be living; Nico's pen was moving; the engineer was a plain man but he had been thirty years in rooms like this one — the men beyond the fall must not be reckoned recoverable.
Must not be reckoned. Not: were dead. Not: were living. It was a bookkeeping sentence, and Nico's hand wrote it down fair, and Nico's head, which kept the tables, heard everything it did not say: that the deep workings ran to the rise; that the far rise had stood above the flood-level and the damp both in every survey since his father's time; that air holds in a rise as in a bell; that no man on the earth's surface knew, that night, what was in the far rise of the east district, and the engineer had chosen a sentence in which no man needed to.
What Nico did in that room, the record must now state exactly, because Nico afterward required exactness of the record above all things.
He spoke once.
He was the secretary; secretaries do not speak; but there was a form, and he used it. At the pause after the engineer sat, he said, from the foot of the table, in the office voice, level as a docket: "For the completeness of the minute — is it the engineer's statement that the condition of the men beyond the fall is known, or that it is judged?"
The engineer looked at him — a long look, a plain man's look, and Nico saw in it, quite clearly, that the engineer knew the difference he was being asked to swear to, and knew why he had built his sentence to stand exactly between the two words. "Judged," the engineer said. "Upon the best information. As all such things are judged."
"Thank you," Nico said. "The minute will show it."
That was the whole of it. That was his speaking, entire, at the one table in the kingdom where the true sentence lived within reach of his mouth — my brother is in the far rise, and the far rise holds air, and you are about to wall him into the dark on a judgment, to save the winning of thirty years — and the sentence stood up in him as it had stood in the man at another beam in another chapter of these accounts, hat in hand, waiting; and what held it down was not cowardice, or not cowardice simply; Nico had ten years of the dialect in him now and the dialect held it down: interest. He was an interested party. Declare it, and he was no longer the secretary but a collier's brother in a good coat, and the room would soften toward him precisely as it closed against him; the Chairman would speak of his feelings, gently; and the minute — the minute would pass to another hand. He would be handled. He knew the handling; he had drafted it for others half his life.
And the vote would go the same.
That was the arithmetic of the pause after the engineer sat, done in three seconds by the best figuring head the rows ever sent up the ladder, and it was correct, every term of it was correct, and he sat silent inside its correctness — the correctness was the cage — and the pause ended, and the Chairman spoke.
The Chairman was not hurried. He asked after the three men brought out, by name, and directed that their families want for nothing that winter. He asked the engineer twice — twice, Nico minuted both — whether any course preserved both the pit and a further attempt, and was told no, and pressed it, and was told no with the figures. He was silent a while with his hands folded, an old urbane head under the lamps, and if there was a black chamber anywhere in him it did not show; what showed was a man adding.
Then he said: gentlemen, the Company held in trust the livelihood of nine thousand — the pit itself was the men's bread, and the men to come, and their sons'; a pit lost was a valley lost; and the forty-one being, upon the best judgment obtainable, beyond recovery, he could not find it consistent with his duty to spend more lives, nor the winning entire, upon a hope the engineers could not certify. He moved that the shafts be stopped.
It was seconded. No hand rose against it. Around that table sat no man who wished the forty-one dead, and no man who would lose the Vesta to disprove it, and between those two positions, as Nico had learned in a warm committee-room years before, the arrangement had already built the bridge: the judgment obtainable, the duty consistent, the trust held. Each man crossed it in his own silence. The silences arrived at the far bank together.
"Unanimous," said the Chairman quietly, "let it be minuted."
And the secretary, in the fairest hand in the Company's service, in the book that was the Company's memory and would be its evidence, wrote the sentence he was to carry to the grave and beyond it, the sentence that was perfectly, exactly, eternally true, and was the whole of everything this book has tried to say:
The question being put, there was no dissent.
They stopped the shafts of the Vesta at four in the morning of the second day, clay and timber and the great oak baulks laid crosswise, before the sun or the rows were up; but the rows were up; the rows had been at the bank three days standing; and the stopping of a shaft is not done quiet, and there is no dialect for it — whatever words the office posted, what the women at the bank saw was the Company walling up the door of the house their men were in, and what the women did was what women have done at walls since walls began, and Nico was not there to hear it, being at the top, where it could not be heard. He read Fenn's wire instead: SHAFTS STOPPED 4.10 THIS MORNING. ORDER PRESERVED.
Order preserved. A well-run coalfield is known by its quiet.
The Vesta was reopened in April, the fire being dead, and the recovery parties went down with the spring, and the Company's discipline held the yard, and the lists were made decently, and the forty-one — the forty-five, with the second rescue party — were brought up over eleven days and buried out of the chapel in relays, the Field Club's funds answering handsomely, all within the scale of allowances, which were found adequate.
They came to the far rise on the ninth day.
There were eleven men in the far rise, beyond a stopping of their own building — they had walled themselves against the damp with their shirts and the brattice-cloth, workmanlike, and the work had held. They lay together in the manner of men sleeping for warmth. Aldany was one, and Petr was one. On the smoothed face of the coal beside them, in the chalk the deputies carry, in a hand Nico had helped teach its letters at a kitchen table on Cinder Row, was the record they had kept, because they were colliers and colliers keep the count:
Twelve strokes, for twelve days.
Under the strokes, four words, and no more, the air being by then what it was and chalk being dear:
ALIVE ALL. AIR GOOD. WAITING.
The stopping of the shafts bore the date it bore. The strokes ran nine days past it.
The inquest sat in June, in the long room of the alehouse, and returned accidental death upon the fire, the sealing having been resolved upon the best engineering judgment, no blame attaching to the management; and desired to record its sympathy with the bereaved; and the minute-book of the board was not called for, no person present knowing to call for it, the minute-book being retained;
and the Company's junior secretary, who sat through the six days of it at the back of the room in a good coat, between his mother, who did not know what he knew, and the chalk-white of her widow's linen, which was now the third such linen of her life —
said nothing.
The verdict entered, the room rising, his mother's hand on his arm light as wool — Nico stood, and looked once across the crowd at the one man in it who was looking not at the coroner but at him: old Marek, small now, grey as ash, close as his books, forty years of other men's weights behind his failing eyes and one question in them, the question of a March dusk in a chapel schoolroom, asked once and never again.
Every door opens both ways, lad.
Nico held the old man's look, one long breath.
Then he turned, and gave his mother his arm, and walked her out into the June light through the aisle the rows made for them — the rows parting in silence for Cinder Row's own, the one they had sent up, the one who sat with the Company and wore the coat, the instrument of order, performing within expectation —
and under the coat, against his chest where it had ridden every day for a year and a half, page upon page in the fairest hand in the Company's service, the stores lay dry, and waited, as all stores wait,
for the issuing.
