Chapter Three — The Obedience

At eighteen he was articled; at nineteen they gave him the beam.

Old Marek's eyes were going — forty years of lamplight will have their fee — and the Company, which forgot nothing and pensioned nothing, arranged the matter in its own fashion: Marek kept the cabin and the title, and Nico did the weighing, under-clerk at the scale of the Vesta, and there was a rightness to it that the whole valley remarked. The lad from Cinder Row at the beam. One of our own, at last, at the place where the money is made and taken. Men winked at him at the cage-side. He was twenty and did not yet know what the winks would cost him to remember.

Because the beam was where the rules came out of the books and put their hands on people, and now the hands were his.

The rule was called laying out. A tub with stone in it past the measure was forfeit whole — not docked for the stone: struck from the hewer's count entire, all four hundredweight, though the coal itself went over the screens and into the Company's wagons and was sold like any other coal. Nico had known the rule all his life the way the rows knew it: as weather, as spite made regular. Now he administered it, docket by docket, to men whose candle-ends he had shared, and he learned the executor's portion of the arrangement, which the rows never see: how small each act is. A glance at the stone. A stroke of the pencil. No anger anywhere, no moment, nothing a man could refuse without refusing his articles themselves. He laid out his own street's tubs, and his street took its dockets from him gentler than it would have taken them from a stranger — it's the bond, lad, we know it's not thee — and their gentleness was the worst of it, because it was credit, and he knew, with the office's own exactness, that he was drawing on it and not repaying.

Petr went down the pit that same spring, fifteen, putting for Aldany's crew in the low seam, in their father's seam, with their father's shoulders and the beginnings of their father's silence. Nico weighed his brother's coal now. There were mornings — Petr's crew coming up short on a wet week, the tubs light, the boy's wage light with them — when Nico sat at the beam doing his family's hunger in troy weight.

He asked Marek once, in the cabin's quiet: "How did thee bear it, forty years?"

Marek was a long time answering, and answered a different question, as the old answer the young.

"There's no bearing or not bearing, lad. There's the day's page. Thee fills the day's page, and sleeps, and there's another. A man can walk any distance that way." A pause; the pipe. "It's only looking back down the whole road at once that's not to be done."

Nico found the screw in his second summer at the beam, because his nature found it. A figure would not sit; he went after it; the hole ran deeper than a terrier likes.

It began with the check-weight — the stamped half-hundred kept locked in the cabin chest for the inspector's visits. Some idle noon, proving a repair to the tare, Nico set the check-weight on and watched the needle settle a hair short of true. A hair. He weighed it again. Again. Then he did what his nature must and his articles never taught: he stripped the beam to its bones, and found under old varnish a set-screw seated where no honest adjustment lives, turned to a purpose and locked on it, and the varnish over the lock older than his own articles — older, he judged by its craze, than his father's death, older than Col's, old as the winks at the cage-side. The Vesta's beam read light. Had read light a shaving on every tub, six hundred tubs a day, for at least a generation: off every hewer, every putter, every laid-out widow's boy; off his father, tub by tub, forty years; off Petr, yesterday.

He sat in the hot cabin with the yard clattering below and did the multiplication that no man in the valley but he was placed to do, and it came out where such multiplications come out: the shaving, summed across the years and the men, was a fortune. Not spite. Not any overseer's private thieving — the sum was too vast, too old, too patient. It was policy. Somewhere far above, this had been decided, and varnished, and inherited, and the inheriting hands had kept it as they kept everything, in good order.

He put the question to Marek that evening, plainly, being still young: "Thee knew."

The old man looked at him a long, long time, and then did a thing Nico had never seen: he barred the cabin door in daylight. Then he sat, and told it — flat, in the voice men keep for confession the way clerks keep it for figures.

"Thirty-one years, I've known." And before Nico's face could finish what it had begun: "And thee'll hear the whole price of speaking before thee spends a word, because I paid to learn it and thee'll have it free. Did the school ever tell thee of Brant?"

It had not. The rows had, in scraps. Marek gave him the whole: the checkweighman the men had once raised by farthing subscription to stand at this very beam; how the man had caught the tare wrong twice and made the Company true it; and how the Company had thanked him, and waited, and in a slack season turned his crew off entire, nothing personal, and then somehow, at no pit in three valleys, ever after, was there work for Brant. Not punished — punishment names the offense. Erased. He carted night-soil now, an old man out on the farms; and no subscription had ever been raised again; and the men who winked at Nico at the cage-side were the same men who let their pipes go out whenever the word checkweigh was said, and went home believing they had decided nothing.

"That's for a man outside the office that touches the beam," Marek said. "For a man inside — " he opened one hand, showing it empty " — there's no tale to tell thee, because none was ever mad enough, so none was ever made an example. Thee'd be the first. They'd make thee a good one."

"Then it stands? A generation more? Petr's coal over that beam every day of it — "

"I didn't say stand." The old man's voice did not lift; it lowered, and that was somehow the fiercer. "I said spend no word. Words they can answer; they've a whole office of answers; thee's copied them thyself." He held Nico's eye. "Keep the figures, lad. Figures don't speak and can't be turned off. Keep them long enough and one day — not in my time, may be not in thine — the world tips, as it tipped for the old kings, and on that day whoever holds the true figures holds the whole game. Till then, nothing. Dost hear me? A clerk's nothing is a deep pocket."

Nico heard him. And being twenty-one, and being what he was, he half obeyed.

He did not speak. He wrote — which he told himself was different, and told himself the office itself had taught him: the proper channel, the measured word, the fair hand. He composed a memorandum to Mr. Fenn. It took him nine evenings. It named no man and accused nothing; it was, he believed, unanswerable and unpunishable both: the beam at the Vesta being found upon careful trial to read light against the stamped weight by so much per hundredweight, the deviation seated and of long standing, it was respectfully submitted that the beam be trued and the matter examined, the writer's computations enclosed.

The computations enclosed. Six hundred tubs a day, the shaving, the years. He was proud of the enclosure. It was the best figuring he had ever done, and it went up to the office of the viewer by the Tuesday bag, and Nico slept that week the sleep of a man who has put a true thing into the proper channel, which is the last such sleep men are issued.

What came back, eleven days after, was two papers in one cover.

The first bore Fenn's own hand, brief as a docket: the memorandum was received; the writer's diligence was noted; the beam stood certified by the proper officer at the last inspection, and the certification of beams lay with that officer alone, in which settled matter the writer would understand that the office could not interfere; the enclosure was retained.

Retained. His nine evenings, his multiplication, the whole true sum — into the north-wall bindings, docketed, dry, stored. Not refuted; that was the masterstroke he sat up that night understanding. Refutation would have made an argument, and an argument has two sides, and two sides can be judged. Retention made only a file. The office had done to his figures precisely what Herrick had taught him it did to all dangerous words: it never spent the stores. It shelved them.

The second paper was the one he did not understand for three years, and understood for the rest of his life.

It was a letter of advancement. The Company, being minded to strengthen the agent's office in the market town, and the under-clerk at the Vesta having been favourably reported for diligence and discretion, Nicolas was raised to the agent's office from the quarter-day, at a salary that made his mother weep into the washing, with occupancy of a Company room in the town, coals found.

Diligence and discretion. He had shown them a fault in their own scale, priced to the farthing across a generation — and their answer, entire, was: certified; retained; promoted. Not a bribe; nothing so crude; no clause anywhere asked his silence, and no clause needed to. They had simply read him — read him better, he came bitterly to see, than Marek had, better than he read himself. Here was an eye that found screws, an eye such as comes off the rows once in a generation. You do not blind such an eye; you might need it. You do not punish it; punishment teaches the rows what was seen. What you do — what the arrangement had done, smooth as the beam's own action, by no one's villainy and to no one's shame, the quarter-day being anyway at hand and the agent's office being anyway short a hand —

— is hire it. Move it up. Set it where its seeing looks downward for the Company, and its wages look upward at the next remove, and every year of its rising adds another storey to the height it would have to jump.

The Company kept a door in the valley for the same reason it kept a beam in the yard.

Both were instruments. Both were set.

Nico took the advancement. Understand him exactly, whoever reads this: he took it with his eyes open, telling himself — and it was not false, that is the pity of the whole trade — that a man higher up sees more, and can someday do more; that refusal would shelve him beside his enclosure and true nothing, feed no one, pull no Petr after; that Marek himself had said keep the figures, and where were truer figures kept than up? Every step of the stair had a reason, and the reasons were sound, and the stair went one way.

His last evening at the beam, he tried the check-weight once more. A hair light. A hair, forever.

"She reads what she reads," he said to the empty cabin, in the yard's old grammar, and heard, too late by half a heartbeat, whose voice his own had become the echo of — every quiet keeper of every set instrument, all the way up.

Then he locked the chest, and gave the key to the next hand, and went up to the town.
