Chapter Seven — The After
He went back up to the city, and was exemplary.
That must be understood, because the Company understood it and drew the reasonable conclusion. The junior secretary returned from his brother's inquest composed; his work did not falter; his hand was fair as ever. In the spring the board, being minded to reward discretion where discretion had been most severely proved, raised him to full secretary, with rooms found and two hundred a year — and the minute of the advancement, which Nico himself entered in the book, may stand as the top's last word upon its own science of men: performing within expectation.
They had reckoned him to the farthing, all his life. They reckoned him now: grieved, and quiet, and bought. And the reckoning was sound by every column the books possessed, because the books had no column — they had never needed one; nothing in the coalfield had ever survived long enough to require it — for a man who has finished being afraid.
Twelve strokes of chalk had finished it. What the fear had guarded all those years — the coat, the coin, the rise, the pulling-after — the strokes had priced. Petr had waited twelve days on the far side of arithmetic that Nico had sat at the foot of the table and minuted, and there is a place past grief, the rows have always known it, where a man goes about with nothing left on him the world can hold; the office met such men sometimes at the counters, and called them difficult; the office had never yet had one for a secretary.
He was eighteen months preparing, and he was never once hurried, because he had been trained by the patientest machine in the kingdom, and he did it honor. Page upon page, in the fairest hand in the Company's service, the stores came out under his shirt: the actuary's schedules with their column ruled per thousand tons; the timber minutes, thirty years of them, the existing scale of allowances being found adequate; the committee papers of the Field Club revision, with the physician's numbers and the law-agent's sum and the sentence about the ascertainable time and place; the four lines on the instruments of order, with his own selection minuted two pages on; his beam memorandum, marked retained, with the enclosure in his own young hand; and the minute-book of the October night — the engineer's judged, the Chairman's duty, and the sentence at the foot in his own fair writing, the question being put, there was no dissent.
Last of all he went home, one Sunday in the second autumn, to the chapel schoolroom, and sat with Marek among the copybooks as the light went, and told him the whole of it, plainly, in row-speech from the first word to the last — the first whole truth he had spoken aloud in ten years. The old man listened with his eyes shut. Then he rose, and was a long time on his knees at the corner of the room, at a certain board of the floor Nico had swept a hundred times as a boy and never once wondered at; and he came back carrying thirty-one years: a ledger in marbled boards, close-written, tub by tub, the beam's figure and the true figure beside it, every hewer of the Vesta by name across a generation, the shaving reckoned and carried forward, patient as dust. The whole robbery, in double entry.
"I told thee once," Marek said, and his voice had ash in it, "keep the figures, and one day the world tips, and whoever holds the true figures holds the game. I said not in my time." He set the ledger into Nico's hands and closed the boy's fingers on it with his own, the way you close a lad's hand on his first pencil. "I find the time's come while I'm still above ground to be ashamed I waited for it. Thee's the court, lad. Sit."
Nico issued the stores on a Monday in November, and he issued them as he had planned it at his cold grate for eighteen months: by no channel of the Company's building.
Not to the office; the office retains. Not to the magistrate; the magistrate refers. Not by petition, memorial, appeal, or proper form, humble or otherwise; he had built those roads himself and knew every one of them home to the same warm room. He took the coach on the Sabbath, when the Company's week was shut, and on the Monday morning the whole of it — schedules, minutes, committee papers, the ledger in marbled boards, and eleven pages of his own, plain row-speech in a fair office hand, naming every document and what it was and where its original lay bound — the whole of it went at one stroke to the two places the Company did not own: to the morning newspapers of the city, all four, each with its full set so that no one editor could be bought or frightened whole; and to the Crown's Commission then sitting — as such commissions sat in those years, gathering dust and evidence — upon the state of the mines.
The papers began printing on the Wednesday. They printed for six weeks. It has been set down already in this book that exposure is never fatal, that the schedules survive the seeing, and that was true, and remained true; but there is one document in the world that arrangement cannot digest, and Nico had known it since the night he wrote the sentence: its own hand. Opinion may be argued with; grief may be condoled; agitators may be answered by the letter-book. But the question being put, there was no dissent, in the Company's own minute-book, in the Company's own secretary's writing, dated four days before twelve strokes of chalk began — against that, the office's whole armory was paper against paper, and the public read both hands, and knew both hands, and the older magic held: it was the fair round hand, this once, that stood in the dock.
He was called before the Commission in the winter, and that was the day the rows came down from three valleys to stand in the street outside — it was never told them by whom the papers had their stores; it did not need telling; the rows keep their dead and they keep their own — and Nico took the oath, and the questions came, and to each he answered in the manner the reader has by now earned the right to expect of him: exactly.
Was he the writer of the minute of the October meeting? He was. Would he state to the Commission the sense in which the words no dissent were to be understood? He would. And he did — the engineer's judged, the arithmetic of the pause, the interest undeclared, the far rise that held air in every survey since his father's time — and then, because oaths were the one grammar left him and he had sworn to the whole truth, he laid his own portion in the scale with the rest, in words the newspapers carried to every row in the coalfields and that the coalfields have not let die:
"I was present, and I was silent, and my silence is in the minute with the rest. I do not come here clean. I come here legible. The Company taught me its books, gentlemen; I am the only man alive who has kept them from both sides of the beam; and I say to you upon my oath that the deaths in these schedules are not accidents recorded but expenditures approved, and that every man in this kingdom who is warm this morning by coal is party to the approving, and I longest of any, for I sat at the foot of the table, and held the pen."
What followed, followed as it follows in the real world, which this account has nowhere else flattered and will not flatter at its end.
The Company lived. Companies live; it was the first lesson of the letter-book and the last. The Chairman retired, full of years, his health long delicate; the board was in part reconstituted; the Vesta wound coal within the twelvemonth under a name with Consolidated in it; the dividend, after an interval, resumed. No man of the long table saw the inside of a court. The law, examined closely, had been kept: judgments had been judged, duties consulted, procedures followed — the reader knows this music. Against Nico himself the law found more purchase: the documents were the Company's property, and their taking was theft at common law, and he had known it would be from the first page he carried out under his shirt; he was tried in the spring, and the jury — twelve householders of the city, coal in every grate of their twelve parlors — took forty minutes to find him guilty as charged, with the strongest recommendation to mercy the clerk of that court had ever entered; and the judge, a careful man, gave him four months, remarking that the law must guard what it could not admire. He served the four months. The rows counted them, stroke by stroke, chalked on a hundred doorposts, the way the count is kept in the far rise of the world.
But the Commission's report carried the schedules entire, and the report could not be retained, being the Crown's; and out of that report, in its own slow season, came the Act — the reader of these pages in a later age may look it up among the statutes, where its clauses read as dry as rule the seventh and are its exact undoing: weighing machines at every mine to be tried against stamped weights at the men's demand, by an officer of the Crown, on no calendar of the owner's; the men's checkweighman established in law, his wage protected, his dismissal actionable; the stopping of any shaft while men stand unaccounted below made subject to the inspector's warrant and the coroner's view; and the dust — the dust took forty years more, truth being cheap and money dear, but the door rule the seventh had latched was on the statute-book's hinge now, and the rows' grandsons would walk through it.
The first checkweighman lawfully elected at the Vesta took his stand at the beam on a spring Monday, chosen by show of four hundred hands. He was a young hewer with a clean quick eye; but the men, who keep their own books, sent a cart the night before out along the farm roads, and so it was that there stood beside him at the scale that first morning, leaning on two sticks, in a coat the subscription had bought — Brant. Ninety years in the valley's weather, thirty-nine of them unemployable, wrong too early, and now, by one spring morning's arithmetic, merely right. The beam was tried at the men's demand at eight o'clock, before the whole yard, against the Crown's stamped weight, and read true — trued that same week, the fitters having come very early, wonderfully unasked — and when the needle settled, the yard made no cheer. Four hundred men looked at the needle standing where it had always been supposed to stand, and were silent, and the silence was not the old silence. It was an audit, closing.
His mother asked him the question once, the only time, the two of them at her table the week he came out of prison, her hands around the good cup she no longer saved for him.
"At the inquest — the June — thee sat by me the six days." Her thumb moved on the cup's rim, around and around, the way she had smoothed every worry of her life. "Thee knew then. All of it. What they'd minuted, and the twelve days, and thee said nowt, and let me walk home not knowing, all that summer."
"Yes," Nico said. There was no other coin left in him; he had spent the softenings, every one, in the offices of his life.
She was quiet a long time. Three linens; two husbands' worth of Club rules; forty years of the store's book; a woman who had thanked the Company at the office door in her black, with her own man's sixpences.
"I buried thy father on their paper," she said at last. "And thy brother on their judgment. Thee's the only one of this house ever made them bury summat of theirs." She turned the cup, and set it down, and looked at him with his father's levelness, and said the words the rows would have carved over that whole age if the rows had been given the carving of anything: "It wanted doing sooner. It always wants doing sooner. But none of ours could ever afford it, and thee could, and thee did it. Sit and eat."
He sat and ate.
He did not rise again in the world; the world has a memory for hands that open its books, and no office in the kingdom would trust its letters to the fairest hand in it, ever after. He kept the school. Marek had two more winters in him, and Nico sat by him the second one to the end, and then took the chapel schoolroom entire, letters and figures, a penny a month, the penny waived; and he kept the books of the men's fund, which grew that decade into a thing with lodges in three valleys and a name the Companies learned to meet at tables; and he taught, to forty years of Cinder Row lads with quick eyes and clean hands, everything the office had taught him, all of it, the dialect, the files, the grammar with the hands washed out of it — taught it the way you teach the handling of powder: this is how it is built, this is what it is for, this is where it keeps its screw.
They asked him sometimes, the sharpest of them, the ones the door would once have been kept for — the door was still kept; Consolidated kept it yet; some doors outlive their unmasking by a hundred years — they asked him, hearing what was offered a lad of parts: should I go up, master?
And Nico gave them the only answer he had earned title to, the whole inheritance of this book in two sentences, which each of them spent in his own way, as each generation must:
"Go up, if thee goes as thyself and keeps the figures. But know what the door is for, and mind — the top is only ever the bottom's silence, funded. Withdraw the silence, and all their arithmetic must find another sum."
Nothing ended. The seams ran under the moor yet, and the dividend found its level, and the age ground on toward its next arrangement, as ages do.
But in the valley the beam read true, and the count was kept in the daylight now, on the men's side of the scale; and on the smoothed coal of the far rise, behind glass in the chapel vestry where the rows had set it when the district was worked out — cut whole from the seam by the men's own subscription, carried up the shaft like a body and like a banner — four words in a dead boy's chalk held their own against the fairest hand in any office of the kingdom, and were found, upon the fullest consideration, unanswerable:
ALIVE ALL. AIR GOOD. WAITING.
What was required had been paid.
Late; at the usual terms; in the only coin the arrangement ever honored.
But paid.
