The office takes his grammar first. In the letter-books he learns where the air goes: words are stores, kept dry, issued at need.

At the beam he docks his own street — and finds the screw. He reports it through the proper channel. The channel promotes him.
The Legitimacy
In the agent's office he drafts the beautiful answers himself — and holds the pen in the warm room where the cost of the bottom is priced.
The Effort
The top is a reading-room. Deaths per thousand tons. The scale of allowances found adequate. And a thirty-year-old minute with his own life in it.

Fire in the east workings. Forty-one men below. The board must choose between the pit and the men — and Nico holds the pen.
